George Washington and the Presidency  Saturday, November 1 @ the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum

Every American President has shaped the office in some way, but no person will ever have the impact on it that George Washington did.  Working from the Constitution, Washington made critical and long-lasting decisions about the symbolic, structural, and daily operations of the presidential responsibilities.  Explore the presidency and its impact on today’s political institutions and civic responsibilities at this Mount Vernon in Arkansas Teacher Institute.

Hosted by the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum

George Washington, an Artful Perspective Saturday, November 15 @ Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

Art can be a powerful primary source for historians, teachers, and students.  At this Mount Vernon in Arkansas Teacher Institute, we invite participants to take a new look at our first president: through his portrayal in portraits, his interests in his youth, his intellectual pursuits in the arts and sciences.    A multi-dimensional figure emerges beyond his memorialized political and military accomplishments.  Exploring these topics can expand the methods and relevant content connections between George Washington and your students.

Hosted by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art
6 hours of Professional ADE credits can be earned.

College, Career, & Civic Life C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards.pdf

The College, Career, and Civic Life Framework C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards has been published and released by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS).  The C3 document is the result of three years of work by a state led collaborative.  It has multiple audiences and purposes:

·        For states it is a guide for developing and/or revising state social studies standards

·        For teachers, schools, and districts it is a document to assist/guide in developing and strengthening current social

         studies curriculum.

The C3 introduction, on page 4, states “This Framework does not include all that can or should be included in a set of robust social studies standards, and intentionally preserves the critical choices around the selection of curricular content taught at each grade level as a decision best made by each state.”

All social studies educators and curriculum specialists are encouraged to read this document as there are instructional shifts emphasizing the acquisition and application of knowledge and clear connections to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.  The format of the C3 document is different than that of other social studies standards and frameworks; there is an inquiry arc, four dimensions, and several pertinent appendices including a scholarly rationale for the document.

The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) will begin the process of revising the ADE Social Studies Curriculum Frameworks in the summer of 2014.  The C3 Framework is one of the documents that the revision committee will examine closely when revising our state frameworks.  Until the time when new ADE frameworks are developed and approved by the State Board of Education, teachers will continue to teach the ADE frameworks applicable to their grade and continue embedding the Common Core Literacy Standards for History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects into their curriculum/courses/ lessons.
